Anthurium andreanum Olivius
In the spotlights
The Anthurium is primarily known as a colorful flowering houseplant. But there are also many different types of cut anthuriums that are gladly being used by many florists. The anthurium was out of fashion for a while, but is back in the limelight as a result of good promotion. People now really appreciate the crazy colors again, especially in the field bouquets that are so popular these days. Jens Kool from nursery Bouman anthurium has given us all the ins and outs of the product.
Inspiration shop
Adjacent to the nursery you will find "The store", an inspiration shop for all interested parties where only anthuriums are sold. A team of enthusiastic florists shows that an anthurium is super versatile. In this cool store, bouquets are made with lots of dry materials that, together with the anthurium, have a vase life of more than two weeks. Through "The store" the company can deliver concepts. This store is also for the consumers from the area so everyone can have a look inside and see what is happening within the company.
Anthurium andreanum
The plant genus Anthurium belongs to the Araceae family. The best-known species are the Anthurium scherzerianum and the Anthurium andreanum. The Anthurium scherzerianum is known for its "pig's tail" (a twisted stock). The genus Anthurium is derived from the Greek "Anthos" and "Oura". The literal translation of this is "flowering tail". The name is appropriate because of the inflorescence, consisting of a bract and the flask on which the flowers are located. Bouman Anthuriums is a proud supplier of Anthurium andreanum, the variety that is grown as a cut flower. Of these, 11 different varieties are now being grown.
Olivius
On November 1, during our visit to the nursery, the new cut Anthurium Olivius® was launched. This beautiful product has a unique olive green color, that is lighter in summer than in winter. Olivius distinguishes itself in the range thanks to this unique color. Olivius is also very suitable for special flower arrangements due to its long stem.
The flask color is green and provides a fresh appearance. The flowers of Olivius have a tested vase life at Anthura of no less than 37 days. Anthura is the breeder of this new species. The cold tolerance is particularly good. Olivius is a nice addition to the Bouman Anthurium range. Now, in addition to Olivius, they also exclusively breed Marea, Safari, Cognac, Spice and Lumina. These products are also available on the Antogether web shop but are offered exclusively at Bouman Anthurium.
The cultivation
We were given a tour by Jens Kool, owner of the Bouman Anthurium company. Jens started as a trainee at the company 9 years ago. And now, 9 years later, he runs the company and does everything he can to promote his product. The company was founded in 1921, after which cut Anthuriums were grown in 1971. The company has been in this location since 1999.
Substrate on oasis
Almost everyone, and certainly the florists among us, know what floral foam is and Oasis is perhaps the best known brand. The waste material from Oasis is used as substrate for the Anthurium and are sometimes refilled. With a watering system, water and nutrients are brought to the plant. In nature the Anthurium grows as an epiphyte, meaning it creates aerial roots and grows in trees, without extracting food from them.
Focus on diversity
Through Antogether, an association of growers they can offer a larger assortment. Bouman himself is also investing in more diversity in the range. With almost a doubling of the range this year (from 6 to 11), Bouman will be well represented in the new year. Due to the crisis in 2010, there was a dip in the range for a long time. Many Anthurium growers stopped production, and with that the supply also declined. Now there is a lot of demand for diversity, so the remaining Anthurium growers can really distinguish themselves, as Bouman is doing with their new variety, the Olivius. The first plants of Olivius were planted last year.
Delivery
Bouman Anthurium works with many students and is therefore a well-known training company. Everyone has a heart for the business and everything is possible, especially now that forces are combined in Antogether: "Together we have it all". There are five to eight grades per Anthurium. There are also many different packaging materials. This way, every customer can determine how he wants to receive his Anthuriums.
Antogether
Bouman Anthurium has recently joined the grower group of Antogether. Anthogether is a growers association that offers a complete range of cut Anthurium. New cultivars are added every year! Bouman Anthurium has recently joined the group. Together with Anthuriumkwekerij Spekflowers BV, Anthuriumkwekerij Oosterzon and nursery van Adrichem, they are responsible for a range of 60 different cut Anthuriums. This group of enthusiastic growers focuses a lot on direct trade. Thanks to the collaboration, they can organize the transport together, guaranteeing fast deliveries. Antogether works with a new webshop in which the products are showcased to their best advantage. So if you are curious about the offer, then take a look!
