Eucomis Goliath

Calendar

Eucomis Goliath is available in September.

In the spotlights

The first glimpse of Eucomis instantly sparks curiosity. Is it a pineapple? A graceful lily? Or something else entirely? What you’re looking at is a powerful bulb flower with a striking personality. Strong stems, an extraordinary inflorescence and a green crest that adds a playful twist. At Peerdeman Flowers, they know exactly how to showcase this remarkable character to perfection.

Peerdeman Flowers: craftsmanship passed down through generations
In Bovenkarspel, brothers Bart and Joost run the family business Peerdeman Flowers, with their father still providing a sharp, critical eye. They specialise in exclusive cut flowers, with a clear focus on quality and craftsmanship. Alongside Eucomis, they also grow Delphinium, Fritillaria, Allium and Molucella. What do all these crops have in common? They demand precision, patience and passion for the craft. And that’s exactly what makes Peerdeman unique.

Eucomis: robust, elegant and exclusive
For florists, Eucomis is a hidden gem. This pineapple-like flower, also called the pineapple lily, immediately commands attention with its thick stems, tall stature and that signature green crown on top. The season is short, running from early September to the end of October, and availability is limited. Only around a hundred stems fit on a trolley. This makes Eucomis a true niche product, perfect for luxury bouquets or as a stand-alone showpiece. Thanks to its firm stems, it’s easy to work with and offers long vase life. A must-have for anyone looking to stand out.

Cultivation

Growing on clay: a craft of its own
The secret behind the quality? The heavy clay soil in which Peerdeman grows. Here, the bulbs stay in place for several years, producing strong and resilient plants. But it’s no easy task. Clay soil demands a lot of handwork and dedication. Eucomis flowers in August and is only harvested once the seeds start to form. This allows the flower to fully develop, giving it an impressive vase life. Proper fertilisation plays a key role in the length and sturdiness of the stems. This year, they’re particularly tall.

What many don’t know: Eucomis originates from South Africa, mainly from moist mountain meadows at high altitudes. The genus counts around 15 species and was traditionally used by the Xhosa people as a remedy for rheumatism. This heritage not only adds character but also cultural value.
Grower’s tip
Bart shares a simple but important tip: keep the water clean. It may sound obvious, but it makes all the difference in the vase. Good advice for florists and consumers alike.

A flower with potential
Eucomis is more than just a beautiful bloom. It carries the story of craftsmanship, of growing with patience and precision. With its unique look and robust build, it’s a flower with great promise. For florists, it offers a way to stand out. For customers, it’s a surprising addition to their home. And for Peerdeman? They continue to invest in quality, because in the world of flowers, character means everything.
