Slijkerman Kalanchoë

Kalanchoë

A few weeks ago we were able to get acquainted with the beautiful Kalanchoe Soraya series from grower Hofland Freesia. But where does this wonderful product come from? We visited grower and breeder Stefan Slijkerman, who gave us a tour of his nursery with the most beautiful Kalanchoe varieties.

Slijkerman Kalanchoe
The Slijkerman company has been around for more than 75 years. Vegetables and pot chrysanthemums were originally grown there, the first Kalanchoes were introduced forty years ago. Slijkerman Kalanchoe specializes in breeding special types of Kalanchoe. Varieties with which a florist or garden center can stand out from the crowd. We were blown away by the number of varieties and colors Stefan showed us. What an enormous palette of color and shapes these plants have. But not only a special color or shape plays a role in the breeding process, but also the vase life of the product is of paramount importance at Slijkerman. The varieties that are bred are extensively tested for vase life, so that a florist or garden center can deliver the best quality to the consumer. Slijkerman grows and breeds Kalanchoe for indoor use, but also varieties that can flourish outside and for no less than 20 to 22 weeks!

Kalanchoe as a cut flower
In 2014 Stefan tied the knot. As a Kalanchoe breeder, he naturally wanted to see his own flowers reflected in the bridal bouquet and decoration. His arranger laughingly commented while working that a little more length of the flowers would be useful and Stefan saw a new opportunity!

After his honeymoon, Stefan wanted to work out his ideas and got to work. Back to the old genetics of the Kalanchoe from the wild, back to the old school strains that have what it takes to give long, stretching flowers. Full of enthusiasm he threw himself into his new venture! And with success! Four years later he was able to put the first cut Kalanchoes on the market. Just like with the plants, Stefan attaches great importance to the vase life and quality of the product. The cut Kalanchoe is therefore extensively tested. Not only on vase life, but also with different flowers, to see if the products go together. Eight years after his wedding, Stefan can offer a beautiful range of Kalanchoes as cut flowers. The Kalanchoe Soraya series is chic, strong, has beautiful long stems, is distinctive and can be used very well for weddings and/or events. Precisely that niche of the market that started his whole idea.
