In the spotlights

The CoasTulip season is in full swing. Already they have beautiful and exclusive tulip varieties that are really worth putting in the spotlight. This week we highlight the fiery "Leo", unique due to its shape and intense color and the exciting tulip "Lingerie". Can we tempt anyone?

CoasTulip
The 5 CoasTulip companies, Gebr. de Groot & zn, C.P Zoontjes, Jac de Winter & zn, Dolf de Wit & zn and Fa. A&L Duin, all grow a unique assortment, so that the assortments of the five members does not compete with each other. This way they can also offer a versatile range for the customer. They all grow in the open ground and know one thing for sure: together you are stronger. That is why they have joined forces and are promoting themselves as CoasTulip (pronounced: Coast Tulip). They are all professionals with small to medium-sized companies where many operations are still performed manually. By using their own paper packaging with a contemporary logo, they create recognisability in the market.

In the spotlights
This year we have already introduced you to three great varieties of Tulips from CoasTulip. As icing on the cake we are happy to share two more beautiful varieties with you.

Tulipa "Leo"

This special Tulip was found in one of those breathtakingly beautiful Heemskerk bulb fields, under the smoke of the blast furnaces of IJmuiden. The passionate flower bulb grower, Leo Aardenburg, found this mutation in his Oxfords field. He immediately recognized it as something special! The old man proudly grew a few more and after he died his son named the tulip after his father.

The name Leo fits perfectly with this tulip! The Latin word "Leo" means Leo. And this Lion is definitely a Lion, it will eat you up! Because of her intense colors, she has a passionate appearance, matching a true fiery love!

"Leo" fits well in the cultivation of CoasTulip. In the open ground, the tulip comes fully into its own and grows into a large bulb. In addition, the vase of this type is incredibly good.

Tulipa "Lingerie"

Men love lingerie, women also love beautiful flowers. This tulip is the perfect combination for both. Do you want to leave a good impression as a man? You can’t go wrong with a bunch of ‘Lingerie’. This tulip is very popular with women, we were told during our visit. If you place a number of tulip varieties next to each other, most women opt for the "Lingerie".

"Lingerie" is a soft pink fringed tulip. With its dark and light pink colored leaves it is a very beautiful exclusive tulip indeed. A cheerful appearance, with a radical touch.

The cultivation

All tulip bulbs are planted by hand. It is important that the bulbs go upright in the sand to guarantee the best possible growth process.

Growing in the open ground
It takes a minimum of three weeks for the tulip to be rooted and settled in the sand. The advantage of sandy soil is that the roots can root deeply, up to 50 cm deep. Because of the deep roots, the plant can thrive and the tulip can gain enough strength.

The bulb must have been subjected to a cold period of 9 degrees Celsius or colder, either outside in the ground or inside cold storage. After the cold period, the greenhouse can be pulled over the crop. The temperature in the rolling greenhouse is heated up to 14 degrees Celsius, forcing the tulips to flower.

Steaming
All growers steam the soil before planting the bulbs; the soil is heated to 90 degrees so that all diseases and fungi are removed. This is the ideal basis for a good growth process.

CoasTulip Experience
Carla Winter organizes guided tours for CoasTulip from Monday to Friday. During these 120-minute tours, the enthusiastic guide shows her visitors the nurseries of the CoasTulip growers! Afterwards she takes you to the sandy soils where the tulips grown and to the greenhouses to complete the tour. Are you interested in this tour?
