Fransen Roses

Spray Roses

We are at the start of the 2023 wedding season. Despite changes in trends and colors that we have seen in recent years, roses remain indispensable during this season. In the past year, rose grower Aad Fransen has made huge strides in the cultivation of spray roses and has fully equipped the nursery for this crop. We paid a visit to his nursery, and Aad and his daughter Ramona kindly took the time to show us around.

Fransen Roses
Aad Fransen has been an active rose grower since 1980. He started with the Private cultivar, after which his range was expanded with several varieties, including the well-known Frisco, Naranga, El Torro, Grand Prix and Red Naomi.

In recent years, in addition to the large-flowered roses, various tests have been carried out with spray roses. And this turned out to be a success. Spray roses have become increasingly popular among florists in recent years. These lovely flowers have become a popular addition to not only bridal work, but also in bouquets. In 2021, Fransen started with six varieties of spray roses on one hectare. Within a year this was expanded to 2.4 hectares, where thirteen different cultivars are now grown.

Pinky Promise, Orange Queen, Kate Lynn, Josephine, Barbados, Bandolero, Leila, Flirting Bubbles, Purple Queen, First Data, Silva Pink, Whitney and Morning Star.

Sustainability

Fransen Roses is MPS-A certified. Where many growers have invested in LED lighting in recent years due to the high gas price, Aad has deliberately not done so. He found that the spray roses could not flourish in LED lighting and the leaves turn more yellow in color. The correct dose of light is checked per day. The nursery has its own power plant that provides the necessary heat and electricity. The surplus energy he shares with three other growers in the area.

Fransen also uses a closed water system. Rainwater is collected in a basin and this is used to water the roses. The excess water is collected, purified and supplied with the correct amount of nutrition. Biological crop protection is used against diseases and pests.

Future

Aad cultivates special types of spray roses in a traditional way. Together with his daughters Ramona and Nadia and a team of enthusiastic employees, they work on this crop every day with great care and an eye for quality. In the coming years, the focus will be on perfecting the cultivation of spray roses of the highest quality.
