Roselily

Lilium

The wedding season is in full swing. Now that we have put all Covid measures behind us, we can catch up again and weddings are back on in full force! The Roselily has grown enormously in popularity in recent years and is therefore indispensable during this season. We spoke to Marianne Stolze, from Moerman Lilium, who told us extensively about the Roselily.

Moerman Lilium
Moerman Lilium is a family business, with more than 55 years of experience in horticulture. The three Moerman brothers, together with their employees, ensure a daily fresh supply to their customers via the auction box in Naaldwijk. Moerman Lilium is the place to go for daily fresh quality lilies in a wide range; “We harvest the most beautiful lilies and Roselilies six days a week, each and every one of them with the most intense colours, fresh green leaves and selected for the right ripeness. In addition, we guarantee a long vase life!”

Candy shop
For the lily lover, the Moerman Lilium website and webshop are a true candy store. Sometimes the range offers more than 25 varieties, so there is a suitable variety for every occasion.
The Roselily range is expanded every year with new varieties. Popular varieties include Roselily Olympia, Roselily Mikaela, Roselily Angela, Roselily Monica, Roselily Isabella, and Roselily Aisha. “The most popular of the range must be Roselily Anouska and Roselily Samantha,” says Marianne. “These varieties always get everyone very excited when they are shown; they are the varieties that everyone always flocks to.”

Wedding and Events

The Roselily is ideal for weddings and events. With its imposing large flowers, which are extraordinary in their beauty, the Roselily is a true eye-catcher for every occasion. The flower buds are 100% filled and give off a light scent, less overwhelming than most single-flowered lilies. When the flowers open, the lily resembles a beautiful large rose. It is not for nothing that the Roselily owes its name to this flower.
The main feature of the Roselilies is that they are pollen free. They therefore do not stain clothing or other decorative materials! In addition, the Roselily is very strong and has a long vase life.

Breeding

The first Roselily originates from 1997, and was discovered as a 'mistake' in the Oriental crop. The pollens had transformed into flower petals. The breeder saw opportunities and continued to develop this beautiful lily. The first Roselily came on the market in 2011.
Because the Roselily has no pollen, breeding is not as easy as with other lily varieties. Once a suitable variety has been discovered that meets all quality requirements, it will take another eight years before this new variety comes onto the market.

Cultivation

The Roselily is harvested riper than the single-flowered lily. Because of her thick, filled flowers, she needs a little more nutrition from the bulb. The buds therefore continue to color a little further, so that the flowers stay beautiful longer in the vase. By cutting riper, the vase life improves. To prevent the flowers from being damaged during transport, the lower flower buds are provided with a net. When this net is removed, the flower opens quickly and you can immediately enjoy the first flowers.

Moerman Lilium grows the lilies and Roselilies in boxes. Each bulb gets a fresh start and is planted in steamed coco peat. Cultivation is done as naturally as possible. The lily's growth process starts slowly, as it does in nature. This is done in the so-called pre-pull cell. As soon as the first points appear above ground, the lilies are moved to the greenhouse.
During the dark days, the lilies are additionally illuminated with LED lighting, so that they get enough light hours. In the summer, the roof of the greenhouse is opened, so that the heat and sun come from outside.

Sustainability

Moerman is the most sustainable lily grower. All cultivation takes place under full LED. By means of a new system, which sucks air through the screen cloth, the greenhouse is dehumidified by outside air. Moerman Lilium is self-sufficient in all the energy required for the climate cells and the LED lighting by using 1650 solar panels, in combination with the CHPs, its own power plant that also uses the residual heat. Almost everything is recycled, including their own propagating material such as the coco peat.

In addition to growing lilies, attention is also paid to all kinds of animals at the nursery. They are of great importance for sustainable cultivation. The weeds are weeded by the chickens, the cats keep the mice away from the garden and various insects are being used against pests and diseases.

Moerman Lilium is Global GAP, MPS-A & ETI certified.

“We are certified to be able to show that it is correct, but we think it is much more important to ensure that things are future-oriented ourselves. We strive for the best in everything we do. The best service, the best quality, Pleasure is also of paramount importance and it must be pleasant to do business.”
