In the spotlights

Green Mother’s Day with Red Naomi Futura
Red roses remain the favourite flower for Mother’s Day. But what if you could give this loving gesture a greener touch? With Red Naomi Futura, this gift also comes with a sustainable story. With its full bloom, deep red colour and strong vase life as you know it, now grown with an exceptionally low carbon footprint. A loving gesture for Mother’s Day and the world of tomorrow. We visited Porta Nova and discovered the story behind this ‘green’ red rose: Red Naomi Futura.

Porta Nova: specialist in Red Naomi
Porta Nova is fully specialised in growing Red Naomi. Across 15 hectares, they produce over 1.1 million stems each week, supported by a team of 230 employees. This focus is reflected in everything they do: consistent quality, strong blooms and a vase life florists can rely on. At the same time, the nursery continues to evolve, with ongoing attention to innovation and sustainability in cultivation.

Red Naomi Futura: familiar and conscious
Red Naomi Futura is the well-known Red Naomi, but with an eye for the future. The rose stands out for its full bloom, deep red colour and strong vase life. Qualities that make it popular with both florists and consumers. Whether it’s for a Mother’s Day bouquet, Valentine’s Day or a special occasion, this rose always makes an impression.

What makes it even more special is how it is grown. With a demonstrably low carbon footprint, Red Naomi Futura is a conscious choice without compromising on quality or appearance. It combines a familiar feeling with the world of tomorrow.

Cultivation

Cultivation with care and craftsmanship
Behind every rose is a carefully managed process. A Red Naomi growing cycle takes around eight weeks. During this time, each stem develops into the level of quality Porta Nova is known for. The roses are cut twice a day and then given time to hydrate in a cooled environment. This ensures optimal freshness and strong blooms upon arrival.

Inside the greenhouse, smart and clean methods are used. At night, a UV-C robot moves through the crop to control mildew. Biological crop protection is used against pests such as thrips. This keeps the roses healthy without excessive use of chemical treatments. For irrigation, Porta Nova uses only rainwater, which is fully collected, purified and reused in a closed system. Nutrients are also reused. Nothing goes to waste.

Sustainable cultivation with measurable results
Sustainability at Porta Nova is not a promise, but a working system. Since November 2023, the nursery has been operating on sustainable electricity, largely generated from wind energy. Thanks to the climator system, heat from the summer is stored underground and reused in winter. This makes the use of fossil gas unnecessary.

LED lighting reduces energy consumption by up to 40%, while providing the roses with exactly the light they need. Irrigation relies entirely on 100% rainwater, collected, purified and reused in a closed system.

Sustainable growing goes beyond energy and water. Porta Nova uses biological crop protection and UV-C technology to control diseases and pests, without harmful chemicals. This keeps the roses healthy and strong, with minimal impact on the environment.

For Red Naomi Futura, Porta Nova takes it one step further. These roses are grown using only wind energy, resulting in a very low carbon footprint, up to 95% less CO₂ emissions. At Barendsen, we fully embrace this development. That is why we offer all Red Naomi from

Porta Nova under the Futura label, ensuring you always choose top quality with a more sustainable foundation.

A conscious choice for florists and consumers alike
With Red Naomi Futura, you give more than just a rose, you share a story. A powerful initiative and a strong example of how the Dutch floriculture sector continues to evolve, growing ever more sustainably and with greater environmental awareness.
