Rob Jacobs Snijheesters
FlowerHunter: Marck Limmen
Originally, Rob Jacobs was a florist, but he no longer found satisfaction in it. However, his love for beautiful flowers remained undiminished, leading to the idea of growing flowers himself. He focused on an exclusive range, small-scale production, and seasonal products. Together with his wife and son Pim, they manage the garden, where they cultivate distinctive products for florists from March until around mid-December.

Diunt Flowers
FlowerHunter: Marck Limmen
Frank Jansen is a young and enthusiastic grower who is following in the footsteps of his parents. Originally, various types of vegetables and fruits were grown in open fields. Over the years, vegetables and fruits have become more of a mass-produced commodity, and Frank and his father want to continue distinguishing themselves. Strawberry cultivation is still their core business, but four years ago, they also started growing Brassica.
This year, they are cultivating as many as 20 Brassica varieties. The focus is on delivering high-quality produce. Frank is a true perfectionist when it comes to his crops. He emphasizes high quality and precise sorting.
Brassica is available from September to the end of November (depending on the weather). Cold nights are crucial to develop the beautiful colors of these crops. Frank and his father see it as a challenge to remain unique and are always willing to try new things. This year, they have, for example, planted peonies for the first time, with a focus on the heavier varieties in the hope of serving the high-end market.

Peeters Hortensia
FlowerHunter: Michel Stieva
After many years in vegetable cultivation, Eric Peeters was ready for a new challenge. He wanted to grow products that could set him apart in the market. In 2018, the peppers made way for hydrangeas.
They offer a diverse assortment of high-quality products. Last year, they made significant investments in a sorting machine that precisely measures bulb size. The complete package must be right: quality, presentation, and customer contact are essential.

Molenaar Dahlia
FlowerHunter: Ruben Walrave
We were warmly received by Johan and his son Chris Molenaar. Their core business mainly involves the sale of Dahlia bulbs (70%). They also sell plants to individuals (15%), and the remaining 15% is dedicated to cut flowers.
The cut flower season runs from mid-August to mid-October. They have a one-hectare field in Santpoort Noord. Each year, one-third of this land is used for cut flowers, while the rest lies fallow. Bulbs deplete a lot of energy from the soil, and the soil needs time to recover after harvesting.
For bulb propagation, Johan leases plots in other parts of the country. Currently, Johan doesn't have certificates, but he values sustainability and the environment. He is actively researching biostimulants for the soil, which are substances that enhance crop resistance to diseases.

World Breeding B.V.
FlowerHunter: Marcos de la Rocha
During the Dutch Lily Days, World Breeding B.V. in Breezand had also opened its doors to visitors. World Breeding B.V. is one of the leading companies in the lilies. It breeds, cultivates and markets new lily varieties.
Striking were the beautiful double OR varieties. The breeders have been working on these for about 25 years. The main feature of this variety is that it is pollen-free. Now they are investing in breeding fragrance-free double ORs. Fairly new in the breeding program are the double OTs.
The main difference between the double OT and OR is that the OT has a rounder flower shape which also curls more and some coarser leaves. The OR has more pointed petals and stays a bit straighter.

Groot en Groot
FlowerHunter: Esther Schreuder en Michel Stieva
The Groot & Groot company is run by brothers Koen and Joost Groot. Like many other companies, Groot and Groot is a family business and Koen and Joost are the third generation of the company. Father Michiel, through his years of experience, still does the growing and is largely responsible for the good quality of the beautiful peonies.
The peonies are grown both in France and in the Netherlands. This also provides them with a large international market and allows them to produce this beautiful seasonal crop for a longer period of time. The Dutch season is very short; it only allows the brothers to produce here in the months of May and June during which time they produce about 30 different varieties of peonies.

Wietse Mellema
FlowerHunter: Jan de Boer
Large spheres, small spheres, spheres with bubbles, long stems and short stems. In white, yellow, pink and purple ... alliums! Wietse grows them all! Wietse Mellema from nursery Mts Mellema-Versteeg has 1000 different types of alliums at his nursery. All these varieties created a sight to see during a special visit.
Love and passion
Wietse started growing flowers at the age of 16. A grower with passion for his cultivation and love for his profession. His biggest challenge lies in discovering new varieties. Varieties that are exclusive, with an added value that people recognize and are willing to pay for.
He grows outdoors on large plots of land. Wietse grows different types of tulips on 15 hectares and on 2 hectares there are at least 1000 different types of alliums. And this is what we came for. Most species are used for breeding, his biggest hobby. Only 30 varieties are grown on a small scale for sale.

Ansu Vanda
FlowerHunter: Esther Schreuder
Ansu Vanda is known for its wonderful assortment of Vandas. In addition to the Vanda's, several special, distinctive plants are also grown.
We were given a fantastic tour of the company by Sven. He took us through the tropical greenhouse where the Vandas and Tillandsias grow and told us in detail about the upcoming cultivation of the Aglaonema, Stephania and Gymno Cactus. We will definitely come back again for an extended edition of one of these special plants.

Agriom has achieved results with its partners in a wide range of ornamental and small fruit crops since starting its breeding activities in 1985. In cooperation with Hydrangea Breeders Association (HBA) they breed Hydrangeas and market them under the name 'Royal'.
The FloraPodium took a look at the garden during the FlowerTrials. Agriom and HBA had put on a great show with the Delphiniums and Hydrangeas. We feasted our eyes again and of course expressed our preference as to which species we would like to see back in the future.

Pico Bello Hortensia
FlowerHunter: Michel Stieva
Like many other companies in the floriculture sector, Pico Bello is a real family business. Only in this case not from father to son but vice versa; father Paul joined the company of son Richard.
Richard started the company ten years ago. Father Paul already worked in hydrangea cultivation and decided to join his son.
Brothers Bob and Danny actually had very different plans. Bob wanted to become a surgeon, but after not begin drawn twice for med school, he decided to take up another study. He had more time to help out in the company and so his love for the company has grown.
Danny had a job as a hydrangea cultivation advisor, but he also followed in his brothers footsteps. Father Paul can take it a little easier these days, the brothers Richard, Danny and Bob grow high-quality hydrangeas on 10 hectares from the beginning of April to mid-December.

Ronald Boots
FlowerHunter: Jan de Boer
When you visit Ronald Boots' nursery, you actually have to sit down for a few minutes to process all the impressions. An overwhelming and impressive color palette will appear on your retina, which cannot be captured with any camera and which cannot be described with words!
Ronald is the third generation of tulip breeders. He has continued the passion of his father and grandfather in the town of Hem. Ronald has specialized in breeding distinctive, exclusive varieties of tulips, with which he has managed to find his own place in the market.
At an early stage, Ronald produces small numbers, that he offers to a handful of regular customers who test these new varieties and provide feedback.
He grows about 1 million tulips per season from his nursery, which he sells to three exporters in the market.
His growing season is about eight weeks and after these eight weeks he completely focuses on the new crossings and on keeping existing species healthy.
We were very happy to be able to enjoy his nursery and will definitely come back!

Gardens of Egmond
FlowerHunter: Michel Stieva
Garden of Egmond has been specialized in growing various bulbs for many years. After Carlo van Schagen had been growing flowers in France and Portugal for several years, he returned to the Netherlands two years ago, where he bought a greenhouse in Heemskerk. Here, in addition to bulb cultivation, Carlo grows exclusive varieties of French tulips on a small scale. He gave us a nice tour, which we would like to repeat in the future!
Eighty percent of the species that Carlo grows are his own species. This makes its range unique and distinctive. A number of varieties are grown in boxes, but the majority are in the open ground. Carlo strives to grow as sustainably as possible, close to nature. The strength of the bulb is extracted from the ground and this benefits the quality of the flower. It is important that the tulips grow very slowly. French tulips require 90 to 100 days of growth before they can be harvested.
Unlike many growers in Heemskerk, Carlo does not have roller greenhouses. Once in the ground, he can no longer control growth and is dependent on the temperature inside. The 'programming' of the tulip therefore requires a good pre-treatment of the bulb before it goes into the ground. In the Netherlands, Carlo has to deal with a different climate than abroad, so he has to reevaluate the conditions here. This is therefore an interesting challenge for Carlo! Carlo has about ten weeks of production.
After our visit we were quite impressed, and we are convinced that we will certainly hear and see more of his beautiful varieties of tulips.

Wijnen Anthuriums
FlowerHunter: Esther Schreuder
Joan Wijnen was only 19 when he took over his father's business and his wife Nancy soon joined him in the business. Together they have built up the company into a nursery of more than 5 hectares, where they now grow more than 35 types of anthuriums.
The Anthuriums are available in various sizes, lengths and packaging options (in boxes or on water, possibly also with extra-long stems). They are delivered fresh every day to the Flora Holland auction in Aalsmeer, Rijnsburg, Eelde and Herongen.
Joan Wijnen also finds it important to make the process more sustainable, which is why he is going to use a wood-burning stove, which reduces the use of gas by 1,000,000 m3. The anthuriums are also grown as organically as possible.

Sjaak van Schie
FlowerHunter: Esther Schreuder
The family business Sjaak van Schie BV was founded in 1980 and specializes in supplying high-quality Hydrangea in pots, for outside and indoors. With a branch in Portugal and a few sites in the Netherlands, they can supply all year round. We were allowed to take a look at the greenhouse, where we were particularly impressed with the Hydrangea Avantgarde. A Hydrangea with one large flower, even bigger than a football. The flower of this special species is like a magic ball. The flower starts out white, but slowly turns to pink or blue. At the end of the season, it can even turn red (classic variant). The plant is supplied in pot size 23 with an optional hand-woven sustainable basket.
They are available from week 8 to week 20.

V.O.F. Bakkum
FlowerHunter: Michel Stieva
During the tulip season we like to visit different growers! A chat, a tour in the greenhouse and we learn something new every time.
And at V.O.F. Bakkum we were warmly welcomed; despite the enormous amount of work they were facing at the time! V.O.F. Bakkum is a true family business; brothers Marcel and Nico Bakkum run the company together with their wives Carola and Rosemary. And their sons also help in the company next to their studies!
V.O.F. Bakkum grows various types of seasonal flowers. In October and November the greenhouses are full of disbudded chrysanthemums. Scilla and Crocus are grown for bulbs and the brothers have also been growing tulips for about ten years.
The majority of the tulips are grown in wooden boxes in potting soil, and a small part in the open soil. The wooden boxes are steamed after each harvest before being planted again in November and December. In the months of January to April they grow various types of tulips, whereby quality is of paramount importance. The entire process of planting, picking and sorting bulbs is done by hand. After all, the human eye is by far the most critical!

Bredefleur
FlowerHunter: Eric Klein, Dion van den Heuvel
Dion and Eric went to visit lily grower Bredefleur. They have several locations; Dion and Eric went to visit the Bredeweg in Moerkapelle where the LA varieties are grown. The company is run by Peter, Thomas and Levi Evers. Levi gave Dion and Eric the tour of the greenhouses. He said that they strive to be the most sustainable lily grower in the Netherlands, therefore no pesticides are being used in the greenhouse.
The lilies are grown in the full soil. The spent bulbs are destroyed and crushed and mixed in the soil, after which new bulbs are planted. The cultivation schedule is very tightly planned, so that they can supply the entire range of LA lilies of excellent quality all year round.

Tunezo
FlowerHunter: Michel Stieva
We really feel at home with Ben Jansen and Wapke Oostveen of the Tunezo nursery. Last summer we already saw the beautiful Scabiosa, Eremurus, Nerine and Agapanthus. This time we came to take a look at their tulips, and, again, we were so impressed! Ben loves beautiful products and a bit of exclusivity. This means that he regularly has to reinvent his production process and see what fits which product. But therein lies his challenge! Our eye fell on the beautiful pink 'Big Love', a sight for sore eyes! And the beautiful 'Apricot Glow' has the most extraordinary color. Both types are special, small-scale and therefore unique. And Ben and Wapke, make sure the entire work process is done by hand and under the eye of the master. Only the best is good enough!

MM Duin- Bearflowers
FlowerHunter: Michel Stieva
Corinne owns the company MM Duin together with her partner and her brother. As with many growers, this is a real family business; Corinne's grandfather started the company in 1928. ’An old craft, combined with new innovations', is how Corinne describes her company.
Like many other tulip growers in Heemskerk, they grow on sand; the roots of the bulbs can grow to 50 cm in length and derive all their strength from the soil. This results in beautiful, heavy quality tulips.

Dutch Lily Masters
FlowerHunter: Eric Klein, Dion van de Heuvel
At Dutch Lily Masters, almost the entire cultivation process is fully automated. The lilies grow in crates, which are distributed on mobile tables.
The tables that are due to be harvested are removed from the greenhouse by a robot. These tables are then transported into the shed, where the employees are ready to cut the lilies. On average it takes around a week to empty the greenhouse, depending on the variety and the season in which they grow.
One of the advantages of this system is that the flowers can be harvested centrally, which minimizes the risk of damage. After harvesting, they are bunched and prepared for shipment in water, all within one minute, which helps to improve the vase life. Read more about the lilium Euphoria.
Kramer Seringen
FlowerHunter: Esther Schreuder
Two weeks ago, Menno and Erik Kramer brought the first Lilacs to the auction. They kick off the season with the variety 'Engler Weissen Traum'. The first two greenhouses have now been cut and the first 'Dark Kosters' will be cut this week. Kramer is now the only grower that has flowers, the other growers will also start in the coming weeks.
We hope for just as good a Lilac season as last year.

Dirk Alderden
FlowerHunter: Rob van Leeuwen en Peter van Delft
Dirk Alderden is a grower who grows his products with love and passion. He has several beautiful rose varieties that have an English nostalgic look, some of which with a lovely fragrance. He grows in the old-fashioned way in the open ground, without a heating system in the greenhouse. This means that his roses grow the natural way, relying on the warmth of the sun. The spring has been exceptionally cold this year, and for that reason his cultivation started later and the stems are a bit shorter. This year, Alderden has expanded his range with some new varieties. He grows all varieties on a small scale, so the numbers are exclusive and limited.
